Self-Clinching Standoffs

Self-Clinching Stand-off

PSM SELF-CLINCHING STANDOFFS is designed to serve as spacers or distance pieces. A simple squeezing action embeds the hexagonal head into the sheet causing the displaced metal to flow into the clinching groove.

Advantages

Design Guide

Hole Size

Holes must be held to a tolerance of -.000” +.003” (-0.00mm +0.08mm) Therefore punched holes are recommended.
Holes should not be de-burred or countersunk.

Installation

Must always be carried out using a squeeze action – NEVER a shock load.

Maximum Sheet Hardness

Rb80 for hardened steel fasteners (P-SO & P-BSO)
Rb70 for stainless steel fasteners (P-SOS & P-BSOS)
Rb50 for aluminium fasteners (P-SOA & P-BSOA)

Heavy Duty Use

Where heavy duty use is anticipated, P-SO and P-BSO fasteners in the smaller thread sizes may be specified in larger body sizes offering greater wall thickness.

(For example: M3 in M3.5 body size would be coded 3.5M3 and 4.40UNC in 6.32UNC body size would be coded 6440 (see dimension charts).

How to Assemble

Self-Clinching Standoffs are easy to install because no special tooling is necessary. However, it is very important to note that they must always be installed by a squeeze action press rather than a hammer blow. Punched holes are always recommended.

Methods

  1. Punch a hole in the metal sheet to the size recommended in our technical data table. De-burring of the hole is not recommended.
  2. Insert the standoffs through the hole in sheet and into the “anvil” as shown in the drawing.
  3. Apply squeezing pressure sufficient to embed hexagonal head flush in sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions About Self-Clinching Standoffs

What are Self-Clinching Standoffs?

Self-Clinching Standoffs (P-SO/P-SOS/P-SOA) are sheet metal fasteners permanently installed into a punched hole to provide a load-bearing threaded post or spacer. They maintain accurate, fixed spacing between two panels, or between a PCB and a chassis, while also offering a threaded connection point capable of carrying significant mechanical load.
PSM Self-Clinching Standoffs are available in hardened steel with a zinc-plated finish, stainless steel, and aluminum. The hardened steel zinc option suits general industrial use at lower cost; stainless steel offers higher corrosion resistance for outdoor, washdown, or marine environments; aluminum offers reduced weight, useful in weight-sensitive electronics and aerospace assemblies.
P-SO, P-SOS, and P-SOA are variants within PSM’s Self-Clinching Standoff range, generally differing by material and finish — for example, steel, stainless steel, and aluminum variants — to suit different load, corrosion resistance, and weight requirements. PSM’s dimensional data sheet specifies the exact material and size range for each variant code.
A load-bearing thread means the standoff’s threaded section is engineered to carry significant mechanical load — both the axial clamping force from a mating screw and any structural or vibrational loads the assembly experiences in service — rather than simply providing spacing alone. This makes Self-Clinching Standoffs suitable for structural panel-to-panel or component mounting applications, not just cosmetic spacing.
A Self-Clinching Standoff is a hollow, often internally-threaded spacer that maintains a fixed distance between two components while also providing a threaded connection point. A Self-Clinching Stud (such as PSM’s PFH series) is a solid externally-threaded post without the spacing function. Standoffs are chosen when both spacing and threaded fixing are required simultaneously.
