Threaded Spacers & Support Pillars

THREADED SPACERS & SUPPORT PILLARS (SPA SERIES)

Threaded spacers & support pillars are components used to maintain precise separation between panels or assemblies while providing threaded interfaces for fasteners. PSM’s SPA series offers spacers and pillars that accept standard nuts or machine screws, combining spacing, alignment, insulation, and structural support into one part. They are especially useful where electrical insulation, reusable threads, or higher temperature performance is required.

PRODUCT INDEX

PSM’s SPA product range includes several variants tailored for different mechanical and electrical needs:

SPA TypeDescription / Use Case
SPA 01 / 02 / 03 (Hexagonal Spacers)Metal or plated brass/stainless steel spacers with hex finish for torqueing with a wrench. Reusable threads and good temperature performance.
SPA 04 / 05 / 06 (Round Acetal Spacers)Made of acetal (POM) plastic, these spacers are lightweight, electrically insulating, yet structurally stable.
SPA 07 / 08 / 09 (High-Strength Insulating Spacers)Plastic spacers with embedded brass inserts or studs to combine insulation with robust load capacity.
SPA 10 (Round Plain Hole Spacers)Through-hole spacers (no internal threads) for mounting where only separation is needed, not fastening.

These variants allow engineers to select based on weight, insulation requirements, mechanical strength, and environment.

Design & Application Guidelines

  1. Load and length balance — Use the shortest spacer that meets clearance to reduce bending stress.
  2. Wall thickness and thread depth — Maintain sufficient wall thickness to avoid thread stripping; deeper threads help in longer spacers.
  3. Interference and fit tolerances — If using interference or press fits, limit interference length to reduce stress transfer to plastic or mating parts.
  4. Thermal and material compatibility — For plastic spacers, ensure the materials handle the operating temperature and thermal expansion.
  5. Electrical insulation — Use acetal or insulating types in electronic or high-voltage assemblies to avoid current leakage.
  6. Reusable threads — Metal or insert-equipped spacers are better for applications needing disassembly and reassembly.
  7. Fastener alignment and clearance — Allow chamfers, lead-ins, or countersinks to guide screws properly into threaded portions of spacers.

Applications & Benefits

Threaded spacers and support pillars are widely used in electronics, enclosures, machinery, panels, and structural assemblies. Their benefits include:

  1. Consistent and precise component spacing
  2. Simplified assembly by integrating spacing and threading
  3. Electrical isolation where required
  4. Ability to reuse threaded connections without damaging substrates
  5. Reduced need for separate standoffs, nuts, or washers

Frequently Asked Questions About Threaded Spacers & Support Pillars

What are PSM Threaded Spacers and Support Pillars used for?

PSM’s SPA series threaded spacers and support pillars are components used to maintain precise separation between panels or assemblies while providing threaded interfaces for fasteners. They combine spacing, alignment, insulation, and structural support into a single part — especially useful where electrical insulation, reusable threads, or higher temperature performance is required.
The SPA range covers four distinct types: SPA 01/02/03 Hexagonal Spacers (metal — brass, stainless steel, or mild steel — for precise spacing and wrenching), SPA 04/05/06 Round Acetal Spacers (lightweight, electrically insulating, thermally stable plastic spacers), SPA 07/08/09 High Strength Insulating Spacers (acetal body with permanently retained brass inserts or studs — combining insulation with robust load capacity), and SPA 10 Round Plain Hole Spacers (through-hole acetal spacers for applications where only separation is needed, not threading).
Choose acetal (POM) spacers when electrical insulation is required between mating parts, when weight reduction matters, or when the operating environment needs good thermal stability without metal conductivity. SPA 04/05/06 round acetal spacers deliver high electrical insulation, lightweight durability, and excellent thermal stability. For applications that also need strong reusable threads, the SPA 07/08/09 High Strength Insulating Spacers add permanently retained brass inserts or studs to the acetal body.
Both are acetal (non-conductive) spacers, but SPA 04/05/06 are plain round acetal spacers relying on the plastic material alone for threading and structure. SPA 07/08/09 feature permanently retained brass inserts or studs embedded in the acetal body, giving them high-strength, reusable metal threads while retaining the insulating and lightweight benefits of the plastic outer body.
Use the shortest spacer that meets the required clearance. Longer spacers increase the bending moment when lateral loads are applied, so keeping the spacer as short as the application allows reduces stress on both the spacer and the surrounding structure.
