Flo-Tech

PSM FLO-TECH is a closed-end molded insert designed primarily for insertion during the plastic molding process (mold-in). It provides a robust, sealed, serviceable thread in both thermoplastics and thermosets, eliminating the need for post-mold tapping or insert installation in many cases. Its structure helps prevent plastic ingress and ensures high performance in torque and pull-out.
Advantages
- Blind ended, whichx prevents ingress of plastic
- Counterbore prevents ingress of plastic and eases assembly on locating pins
- Rolled threads reduce risk of contamination of mouldings due to metal swarf
- Absence of PIP at blind end reduces risk of contamination and assists automatic insert loaders
Key Features
Closed end design: The insert’s closed base keeps plastic out of the thread during molding, preventing flash, debris or contamination.
Three opposed helical knurl bands: These knurls provide strong anchorage and resist pull-out and torque loads.
Groove space between knurls: Makes room for material displacement, reducing stress in the plastic matrix.
Chamfered entry: The insert’s chamfered end facilitates location during mold placement and reduces stress at the entry side.
Metal shavings reduction: The blind, closed end design avoids waste material and minimizes risk of metal burrs or particles entering the molded part.
Flexible install options: While designed for mold insertion, Flo-Tech may also be installed post-molding in certain applications (consult engineering).

Specifying an Insert

Boss Design Specification
Flo-Tech inserts can be installed after moulding in some applications, please consult the PSM Technology Centre or your local Sales Office for further advice.
Mould pin design is critical to the success of the moulding-in operation since the features shown are used to locate and retain the insert prior to moulding and prevent the ingress of plastic during the process.
Design & Application Guidelines
Locating & Pin Design
To ensure reliable mold‐in placement, include locating pins or recesses that hold the insert in position during injection. The geometry of these locating features is critical to prevent insert displacement or plastic flow behind the insert.
Hole & Mold Cavity Design
Design the mold cavity and gating so the plastic fills around the insert without voids or flow defects. The insert pocket should match the insert dimensions closely to prevent micro-movement during molding.
Material & Plastic Compatibility
FLO-TECH works with many plastics, including thermoplastics and thermosets. Be cautious with materials that shrink heavily or have high residual stress, as that can affect insert retention or induce stress cracks.
Torque & Pull-Out Testing
Because the insert is intended to carry load, validate the required torque, pull-out, and fatigue performance under actual conditions (temperature, humidity, vibration).
Post-Mold Installation (Optional)
If mold-in isn’t feasible, FLO-TECH can sometimes be installed after molding, especially in prepared holes, but this must be validated per design.
