U Type Nuts

Advantages
PSM U Type Nuts offer substantial savings in manufacturing costs. They can be applied quickly and easily into self retaining position either over panel edges or to inside panel positions with most types providing a degree of float to allow for panel misalignment.
- No welding, staking or riveting
- Self retaining and floating
- Self locking and vibration proof
- Quick and easy to apply
- Lightweight
- Non-paint clogging
Key Features
- Grips over a panel edge or lip and provides a captive nut position for a screw from one side
- Allows some floating movement, which helps when mating holes are not perfectly aligned
- Self-locking and vibration resistant, reducing loosening without extra locks
- Quick to install with minimal tooling, often just slide or clip into place
- Suitable for both metal and certain plastic sheet parts or combinations
Method of Assembly
1. The P.S.M ‘U’-Nut is placed over the edge of the panel (Fig a) or through a pre-tamped slot (Fig b) and simply pushed home until the rear of the fastener locates against the panel/slot edge or the extrusion snaps the fastener into the clearance hole.

Frequently Asked Questions About U Type Nuts
What is a U Type Nut?
A PSM U Type Nut (CBUN) is a specialised fastener that combines a spring-steel clip and a threaded nut into a single U-shaped piece. It clips directly onto the edge of a panel without requiring a pre-formed hole or pierced thread, providing an instant threaded fixing point secured purely by spring clamping action.
What is the advantage of a U Type Nut over a separate nut and bracket?
A U Type Nut combines two functions — edge retention and threaded fixing — into a single component, eliminating the need for a separate bracket, weld nut, or pierced and tapped hole. This reduces part count, simplifies assembly, and allows a threaded fixing point to be added to a panel edge in seconds without secondary operations.
What material is the PSM U Type Nut made from?
PSM’s U Type Nut (CBUN) is manufactured from Type 300 series stainless steel, chosen for its corrosion resistance, spring elasticity, and durability under repeated clamping cycles. Type 300 series stainless steel is a widely used austenitic grade known for good general corrosion resistance and reliable mechanical performance.
What panel thicknesses are suitable for U Type Nuts?
U Type Nuts are designed to clip onto a specific range of panel thicknesses, determined by the spring gap of the U-shaped clip section. Installing a U Type Nut on a panel thicker or thinner than its specified range can result in a loose fit or excessive clamping stress. PSM’s dimensional data sheet specifies the panel thickness range for each U Type Nut size.
What thread sizes are available for PSM U Type Nuts?
PSM U Type Nuts (CBUN) are available across a range of standard metric and/or imperial thread sizes to suit common mating screw specifications. Refer to PSM’s dimensional data sheet or product search listing for the full range of available thread sizes and corresponding panel thickness specifications.
