Hose Clips
PSM Hose clips (also called hose clamps) manufactured from spring steel are used to provide reliable, low-pressure clamping around flexible hoses or tubing, often in plastic or hybrid assemblies. METHOD OF ASSEMBLY:
Squeeze together the two wings of the hose clip and place over end of hose. Push hose clip over connection and release the ‘wings’.
WHEN SPECIFYING, PLEASE STATE:
- Quantity
- Prefix (CBHC)
- Part No.
- Finish code (e.g. 3000 CBHC-0901-13)
How Hose Clips Work
A hose clip encircles the hose or tubing and applies radial pressure when closed. Spring steel’s elasticity allows the clip to maintain tension, accommodating minor changes in diameter due to temperature, pressure, or material aging. The design typically involves a split ring or band that can expand or contract and grip the hose uniformly.
The clip is often squeezed open or spread to install over a hose end; once the hose is pushed onto the fitting, the clip is released, clamping the hose in place. Because the clip holds tension by spring force, it prevents loosening under vibration or movement.
Design & Application Guidelines
Material & Coating
Choose high-grade spring steel (CS60, CS70, or equivalent) with a corrosion-resistant finish (e.g. zinc plating or passivation) to avoid rusting or abrasion against plastic hoses.
Clip Dimensions & Fit
- The nominal hose diameter tolerance should match the clip’s range to ensure adequate grip without overcompression.
- The clip width, thickness, and band cross section must be sized so the spring force is sufficient yet doesn’t crush softer hoses.
Installation Technique
- Use a tool or pliers to spread or pry open the clip just enough to slip over the hose end.
- Slide the clip into final position over the barb or fitting shoulder before releasing it so that it clamps properly.
- Avoid bending or distorting the clip while opening. It should return close to its designed shape to maintain tension.
Avoiding Damage & Ensuring Longevity
- Do not overtighten beyond the elastic limit. Excessive clamping force may cut into or deform the hose material (especially soft plastics).
- Periodically inspect for wear, corrosion, or loss of tension in applications involving vibration or temperature cycling.
